Radha Chalise has been elected as the president of Nepal Press Union Gorkhapatra Pratishthan Branch. Secretary and Central representative of Nepal Press Union; Kedar Dahal has elected a 15-member working committee unopposed under the chairmanship of Chalise at the general meeting held on Sunday at the Rohwar branch.
The meeting has also appointed Bam Bahadur Rayamazhi as the vice-president of the branch and Sita Sharma as the women's vice-president. Similarly, Pallav Bhusal I appointed as the secretary, Swikrit Nepal as the treasurer and Ajita Rizal as the joint secretary were elected unopposed through the general meeting.
Likewise, Ishwarchandra Jha, Ramesh Bahadur Thapa, Meenraj Bhandari, Dinesh Luintel, Shankar Lamichhane, Manish Timilsina, Prajit Shakya, Sanam Maharjan and Srijan Khatri were elected unopposed among the members.
Earlier, the General Assembly was inaugurated by Central President of Nepal Press Union; Shiva Lamsal, Executive President of Gorkhapatra Institute; Bishnu Prasad Subedi and General Manager; Lal Bahadur Airi along with others. Inaugurating the general meeting, President of Nepal Press Union, Lamsal said that the press union is a common organization of working journalists who believe in democracy and freedom.
He held the view that he is responsible for the workers working in the union communication establishment and expressed his commitment to always stand for the trade union rights. He said, 'Journalism survives only in democracy. Gorkhapatra Sansthan needs to pay special attention to the safety and convenience of the workers and remain free from political pressure.'
Likewise, the executive chairman of the institute; Bishnu Prasad Subedi, said that the role of the press union in Nepali journalism is constructive and commendable. "Recently, the layout and news content of Gorkhapatra have been improved. We have received positive feedback from readers.
There are three responsibilities for Gorkhapatra - the responsibility of the state, the citizen and the market. By accepting all these three accountabilities, we are trying to improve the Gorkhapatra in an effective and timely manner," said President Subedi.
He also promised that the management will take appropriate decisions for the professional development of journalists and employees working in the institute. Similarly, General Manager; Airi said that Gorkhapatra is a place of practice and institutionalization of Nepali journalism.
'The Press Union is an organization of journalists who believe in democracy. Everyone has faith in this organization which is fighting for the professional rights of the workers. Is Gorkhapatra still a state-owned media? There is an ambivalence that it belongs to the government, but it should be led to the belief that it belongs to the citizens,' said General Manager Airi.
In the opening session of the general meeting chaired by Sharadraj Subedi; President of Nepal Press Union Gorkhapatra Foundation Branch, Acting Editor-in-Chief of Gorkhapatra Dainik; Shivkumar Bhattarai, Vice Presidents of Nepal Press Union; Nakul Aryal and Jeevan Bhandari, General Secretary; Dilap Paudel, President of Union Province Valley Foundation Branch; Leelaraj Khanal, Nepal Journalist Association Gorkhapatra's Saroj Dhungel, president of the foundation branch, and others were present for the event. In the event, Press Union Gorkhapatra Foundation branch awarded the deputy executive editor of The Rising Nepal; Bishnu Gautam with a certificate of honour.
The union informed that Gautam was honored for his long-term contribution to the Gorkhapatra Institute. Gautam was honored by Shiva Lamsal; the central president of the union, Bishnu Prasad Subedi; the executive president of the Gorkhapatra Institute, and Lal Bahadur Airi; the general manager.
