Nepal Press Union (NPU) is an umbrella organization of democratic and working journalists that is advocating for the rights of working journalists in Nepal. It was established on 27 May, 1991 (2048 B.S.) with the motive of safeguarding the rights of working journalists, welfare, press freedom, freedom of expression, trade union rights, promotion and consolidation of democracy, protection of human rights, as well as legal representation and advocacy for the professional security of journalists. As a first member organization of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Press Union has been organizing and continuously advocating for the knowledge, rights, and interests of democratic journalists.
The Press Union is actively involved in the consolidate of the media sectors in Nepal thereby advocating for the arrangement of required laws, policies, regulations, and a code of conduct for journalists. Further it has been working towards implementing the Working Journalists Act and creating a friendly environment for press fraternity, and ensuring their professional and physical security. The Union is also aimed at establishing and promoting the minimum values and credibility of democracy in journalism and contributing to the professional development of journalism. Press Union is committed to independent media, acceptance of the basic principles of human rights, media pluralism, and strengthening of democratic values and systems.
The Press Union is constantly playing a crucial role in defending press freedom and fighting against any form of media censorship or intimidation. It keeps active engagement with the government, media regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders to address the challenges faced by journalists and advocating for their rights in large. It has been instrumental in bringing important issues related to journalists' welfare, safety, and professional integrity to the attention of concerned authorities.
